Dr. BP Agrawal

Founder, President, Sustainable Innovations

Dr. BP Agrawal, founder and president of the nonprofit corporation Sustainable Innovations, seeds change, nourishes change, and harvests change.  He founded Sustainable Innovations to harvest innovations in engineering, entrepreneurship, business, and social policies to build systemically sustainable social enterprises that can negotiate the difficult path from laboratory to market. He conceived Aakash Ganga, a self-sustainable domestic rainwater harvesting system, to provide safe drinking water in perpetuity. In 2006, Aakash Ganga won a Development Marketplace award for sustainability and innovation. Aakash Ganga is now poised to provide drinking water to 250,000 people by 2012. In 2007, he promoted kiosk-based clinics to provide care to vulnerable populations. The kiosk makes medical knowledge mobile and extends its reach to urban slums and, in 2007, won a second Development Marketplace award for extremely low-cost delivery of health care. More recently, he was named Purpose Prize Fellow for social innovations and won planning grant from the United Nations Development Programs (UNDP) to scale up Aakash Ganga.  Dr. Agrawal is frequently invited by academic institutions, international bodies such as UNDP, and corporate laboratories to speak on management of innovations and the Gandhian approach to sustainability. He graduated from the University of South Florida with a Ph. D degree in engineering science and is an alumnus of the MIT Sloan School’s Executive Management program.
